Braunschweig (Brunswick) is
the second largest city in Lower Saxony in northern Germany with approximately
240000 inhabitants.
It is a city with a medieval structure that rose from a supply and resting
place about 1000 years. In the following centuries Braunschweig became
an important city for trade and culture. Still now a lot of the medieval
relicts can be seen in Braunschweig - such as the famous timberframe buildings,
the castle and the churches.
Nowadays Braunschweig is the centre of the most intensive research region
in the whole European Union. The spectrum of the research ranges from
Biology, Physical Engineering and most of all aerospace. Europe's only
research airport is located in Braunschweig and with it the Federal Civil
Airworthiness Authority of Germany, the German Centre for Aeronautical
and Space Research "DLR", Aerodata AG and many more. Furthermore
there is the oldest technical university in Germany, the Technical University
Carolo-Wilhelmina, established in 1745. Now this impressive educational
facility has more than 14000 students and is organized in 10 departments
and 111 institutes. The University offers a wide range of courses and
research opportunities in the fields of information technology, the sciences,
physics, medicine, chemistry, pharmacy and more.
The university offers plenty of lectures and seminars to aerospace students.
Most of those are offered by the following 4 aerospace-related institutes:
- Institute of Flight Guidance
- Institute of Aerospace Systems
- Institute of Aircraft Design and Lightweight Structures
- Institute of Fluid Mechanics
Furthermore the university owns a research aircraft Do 128-6, that is used
as a flying classroom for the students who do their aerospace laboratory.
